 I’ve tried everything else. Earplugs, which my friends swear by, but fall out while I sleep. All the apps: Rain Rain, White Noise, and Noisli. The sound quality is only as good (read: bad) as your phone’s speaker, and there’s nothing worse than when an app designed to help you fall asleep turns off midway through the night—generally right when your roommate, child, or neighborhood ambulance decides to disrupt your peaceful slumber. (Yes, you can upgrade to the paid app that will go on endlessly but I haven’t liked any enough to upgrade.) Besides, none can recreate the blissfully flat, analog ambient whir of the Dohm. My only complaint? Once you start getting used to sleeping with the White Noise Sound Machine, you’ll want a travel size as small as a bottle of Ambien.

Study: Walking and Texting Ruins Your Posture

Texting while walking might not just cause you to fall face-first into a pool; it could also be bad for your posture, according to a new study.
Researchers at the University of Queensland observed 26 people as they walked, both without a smartphone and with one. They noticed that participants who were texting walked more slowly, hunched their shoulders forward, and didn’t walk in a straight line.
Lead researcher on the project Siobhan Schabrun characterized the walk-and-texters as elderly robots.
“They lock their arms, trunk and head together all in aid of keeping the phone steady in front of their eyes,” she explained. “Previous studies on older populations shows that this type of more rigid posture puts you at greater risk of falling.”
So, um. Don’t walk and text. You’re going to hurt your back, and also your face, when you run into a telephone pole.

Rep. Vargas releases statement on what he saw outside the Capitol during lockdown incident

Today, Congressman Juan Vargas, D-San Diego, made the following statement after experiencing the incident that unfolded outside of the Capitol. “I was outside walking back to the Capitol when I heard a ‘pop, pop’. I thought the sounds were nothing more than a car backfiring, until I looked up to see a Capitol Police Officer charging at me yelling, ‘Stop, stop!’ Upon getting closer, he noticed my Congressional Pin, asked me if I was a Member of Congress and instructed me to show him my ID. Once the officer had verified my identity, I was told to remove my pin because I could be a potential target. “At that moment, I realized something was terribly wrong and asked him what was happening. I was informed that shots had been fired and that two officers were down. It was at that instant that I realized that the popping sounds I had previously heard were gun shots, not a car backfiring. Seconds later there were numerous officers with machine guns surrounding the area where I was standing, and I was sheltered in place.”
